2018 is finally upon us and a new year has never looked so good. For my first blog post of this year, I wanted to introduce you to one of my favourite local creators on the Sunshine Coast. As many of you know, I am a big earring fiend and I love the Bowie-inspired pieces she made me. Bel, the creator of Motel Mellow, is such a wonderful artist and there would be no better way to tell her story than through her own words.
“My name is Bella, most people call me Bel, and I am 23. I am currently studying social work at university and working in my family’s restaurant. My hobbies include listening to music, going to gigs, painting, riding my bike (as in leisurely cruises around my hometown) and making jewellery. ”
How did Motel Mellow start?
“I have been making my own jewellery from a young age, beading was totally my thing as a child, and have always had some sort of creative project on the go.
Since getting my ears pierced about ten years ago, earrings have been my favourite accessory, and the bigger the better!
I like making my own unique earrings, which my friends and family have been really supportive of, with a lot of friends asking to buy them from me. Ideas are constantly floating around in my head and I never really stop making earrings, so it got to a point where I was like “this is ridiculous, I am never going to be able to wear all of these!!” – hence, Motel Mellow was born!”
Is there a story behind the name?
” wish I could tell you a great story about the name, but honestly one day I was just daydreaming and the words popped into my head. I felt that those words flowed well, and fit my perception of my brand and how I want it to be portrayed to the world; relaxed but fun, like a seventies-esque summer holiday. ”
What would you say is your biggest inspiration?
“All of my family and friends are constant inspiration for me, as cliche as it sounds, I will often be making earrings with a particular person in mind. As a child I always had someone “famous” that I looked up to and thought was amazing, but that has changed with age. I’d probably say that my biggest inspiration now is just people, I don’t think that there is one person or one creative that inspires me more than the next person. Obviously there are people I relate to more than others, but I think that everyone can be inspiring in different ways.”
Are there any future plans for us to get excited about?
“My initial plan for Motel Mellow was for it to be “eco-friendly”. I’m a bit of a hoarder, in the sense that I keep bits of paper, string, plastic and any other random materials that I think I can use for some sort of creative project. Before Motel Mellow was a thing, a lot of my personal earrings were made from these random materials that I collect! So my aim for the future is to incorporate these materials that would usually be going to landfill into my dangles and slightly transform Motel Mellow into something more sustainable. Using recycled objects, and making them pretty as well as wearable and durable, can be really challenging at times, which is why I have stuck to using polymer clay as my main material, but I am pretty certain that Motel Mellow will be evolving within the next few months.”
Where can people find your Earrings?
“Motel Mellow can be found on Etsy at https://motelmellow.patternbyetsy.com/ and on Instagram @motelmellow. I hope to be doing some local markets soon, so that information will be posted to my Instagram when it finally happens, keep an eye out!”
Before I go, I just want to say a huge thank you to Bel for being such a pleasure to work with. She took a little part of my soul and put it into my own custom earrings. I have a feeling I’m not going to be taking them off anytime soon!
