It’s about time for a second installation of Minty Fresh – where I introduce you to an up and coming artist from my own beautiful Australia. I think investing in local designers and musicians is such an important part of helping a community to thrive. And it doesn’t hurt to know that your money is going towards a quality “home grown” product.
A while ago I teamed up with the talented artist Monique Ellis for a collaboration on Instagram. If you follow me @hopelessventures then you might have seen a gorgeous pair of embroidered jeans that she custom created for me. I loved them so much that I asked her to make me three very special patches.
The first patch was of my idol in life and beyond – the legend David Bowie. And there is nothing more iconic than his Ziggy Stardust lightning bolt. The second was of a bee because they are my adopted symbol of perseverance and prosperity. And lastly, I asked her to create a Hopeless Ventures patch for reaching 400 subscribers on the blog – which is a momentous achievement for me and I’ve already given myself a few pats on the back.
Monique is based on the Sunshine Coast which makes her a perfect candidate for my local artist venture. She started creating her artwork when she was in high school. She had never sewn before and was amazed by how therapeutic it felt. She started selling her embroidered pieces locally in bookstores and cafes, sometimes the occasional market. She told me,
“I have always had a passion for art, it is a strong part of my Identity”
She does custom work as well as creating her own designs. Mon also holds workshops where she teaches people the art of embroidery, you can keep up to date with her classes on Instagram and Facebook (which will be linked below).
Mon is such a lovely person and was so generous to collaborate with me. I think she’s a real gem and I will definitely be purchasing some patches in the future.
Mon also sells her art at Berkelouw Books and Humdrum Espresso in Eumundi so if you happen to be in the area definitely check it out.
If you have any enquiries for her you can contact her through Etsy or her social media accounts.
